End of Spring Semester: we made it!

Ciao a tutti,

we made it! we survived our first year in Tampa, Florida.  A beautiful, charming, at times exhausting, place.

Well, the April 2014 screening of LA GRANDE BELLEZZA (2013) was a successful one, not just because you guys came to the movie night, but because your comments were so clever, thought-provoking, profound!

Paolo Sorrentino's film THE GREAT BEAUTY, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film 2014, also gave us the opportunity to expand our discussions in our MAFIA IN THE MOVIES class.

We compared it with THE CONSEQUENCES OF LOVE (Le conseguenze dell'amore, 2004), also by Sorrentino. Moreover, we made connections with Garrone's GOMORRAH (2008), since both filmmakers are from Naples, an extremely complex, problematic and exceptionally creative city.

As usual, movies give us a lot to think about and discuss about, this is why we like them so much!!!

Have a great summer and enjoy your well-deserved vacation!

moving...again!

Ciao a tutti,

in Ohio we watched other movies, besides Benigni's classic "La vita e' bella" (if you want to understand better this movie, and in general Benigni, please read Carlo Celli's book "The Divine Comic"): F. Ozpetek's "La finestra di fronte" and  "Mine vaganti". We laughed with "Benvenuti al Sud" by Luca Miniero, and we were scared with the controversial but great "La sconosciuta" by Giuseppe Tornatore.

What is going now? Well... IFS has moved to...Florida! Can you believe that? we started in 2007 in the icy cold A2 and now we are grilling and tanning in the sunshine state!!! Things change, but one never does: our love for cinema, that started many many many years ago, when I watched "The Kid" ("Il monello") and "Umberto D." with daddy, on Tv, as a child in the 70s...

So, what are we going to watch now?? suggestions are welcome!

Enjoy Miniero's film trailer:

Carissimi,
after many Italian film screenings in Virginia, we have moved to Ohio...I know, you are thinking that IFS is like a gipsy...:-) I feel more like a character in "Tre uomini e una gamba"...The next film will be held in September and we'll be a Benigni's movie.
BTW, we have recently watched Baaria by Tornatore, and we liked it, despite a cruel scene in it. I hope you can find the time to watch it...Tornatore is always Tornatore!

Carissimi,
as you probably know by now, we are now located in Virginia. We left Michigan with tears in our eyes but the Old Dominion is not less beautiful than the Wolverine state...:-)
We just received a piece of news about an Italian film that we would like to share with you.
The title is IO SONO LI
Hopefully we'll be able to watch it here too!
saluti,

Ciao a tutti! Buon 2012 e buona...befana!
Thinking about a good Italian movie to watch today?
I have recently watched NOI CREDEVAMO by Mario MArtone, and I must say that I LOVED IT! the book that inspired it was written by Anna Banti, one of the best Italian authors of the XX century...
Let me know waht you think about it.
What are your favorite Italian movies of 2011?

IFL is baaaack!

Ciao a tutti,
after some vacation time here we are again!
These days we have been watching what is considered by some people a "cult" movie about Italian youth. It is set inthe '80s but was released in the 2000's.
There are better movies out there, but this is cool to relax, listen to good music, and refresh your Italian...
Here it is:
