I recently watched the film "Le Notti di Caribia" directed by Federico Fellini. I was particularly taken in by the portrayal of Italian women during the 1950's as dependent on men. The main character, Caribia, is searching for a suitable man for her, but is continuously let down. One of her friends says that she must find a man to protect and provide for her. This is a fundamentally sexist ideal as it is revealing of the the extreme sexism in this movie. Furthermore, there were deep religious undertones through out the movie as Caribia turned to the Madonna for help. This is telling of Italy's strong passion for Catholicism during the time period.
